The Milky Way is about 100 Light Years, the Andromeda Galaxy is double that size, but the largest Spiral Galaxy on record at the moment is NGC 6872 in the constellation of Pavo. In a elliptical galaxy, the stars are not arranged and can orbit in elongated patterns and routes. In a spiral galaxy, the stars are in a disc shape. Spiral and elliptical galaxies have one thing in common, they both have Supermassive Black Hole but how the stars are arranged are different. Photos of the Andromeda Galaxy show what a spiral galaxy looks like from above. The nearest largest galaxy to us, the Andromeda Galaxy is also a spiral galaxy. By calculating and observing other stars' locations in the galaxy, it is determined that our galaxy is a spiral galaxy. Just as with the S type galaxies, the sub-types a through c can be combined to indicate more of a transition between two types, such as the example of NGC 1300 below.A Spiral Galaxy is so called because its flat and arms of the star reach out from the centre outwards. This type has very loose arms that can be fragmented, and they join together in a central bar but it is not an obvious separate feature. A fourth type, SBd, was added to the Hubble Sequence by de Vaucouleurs. The bar is still visible, but it is smaller, less prominent, and fainter. SBc galaxies have loosely wound arms, clearly resolved into individual clusters of stars and nebulae.
